How to set up custom domain on blogger

Google Blogger is one of the best platforms to start your blogging career.

Do I need to purchase a hosting plan in Blogger?

No, there is no need to purchase any hosting plan.

Most people prefer to start their blogging career with Blogger/Blogspot because of free hosting, unlimited storage, and unlimited bandwidth. Technically you don’t get unlimited storage but you can manage it.

The custom domain name shows that you are professional and it also helps you to get a higher rank in Google search. The custom domains rank higher than a subdomain. Everything you need in blogging is traffic. Obviously, if you rank higher in Google brings traffic to your site or blog. More traffic equals more money.

If you are a new blogger you can start with a free Blogspot subdomain. You can also read  “How to start a blog with Blogger” for reference.

Things you will need during the custom domain set up are:

  • A Gmail Account
  • A domain (e.g. yourdomain.com)

In this guide, I will take a domain purchased from GoDaddy as an example. I assume that you know how to purchase a domain. If you don’t know how to purchase a domain then please let me know in the comment section below.

So let’s get started and connect a custom domain to Blogger.

How to setup custom domain on Blogger?

Go to settings

In the first step, you have to log in to your blog. After logging in you have to go to Settings > Basic in your Blogger dashboard.

Here you will see the Publishing section. In the Blog Address of Publishing section, you will see + Set up a third-party URL for your blog link.

Click on + Setup a third-party URL for your blog, add the domain name (Add your domain name with www. prefix), and Save.
Now, you will see an error showing “We have not been able to verify your authority to this domain”. Below you will see your CNAME records which you will have to configure.

Note: Do not click on the Save button.

Login to Domain Control Panel

In the next step, you have to log in to your Domain Control Panel. Go to My Products section. Select the domain name you want to connect with your blog.

Click on the DNS button to start adding the records. (You can refer to the image below).

  • Click on the edit button of the CNAME field.
  • Update the Host and Points to fields as shown in your Blogger account.
  • Click on Add button and select CNAME from the list.
  • Copy another Host and Points to from the blogger account and update the fields. Click on the Save button.
  • Go back to your blogger account and Click on the Save button. Again click on Edit in the Blog Address field.

Again return back to your domain control panel. Like above click on Add. This time in the Type list you have to select A.  Fill the Host field with @ and update the Points to with 216.239.32.21. Like this, you have to add a total of 4 A records.

The IP addresses which you need to add are:

  1. 216.239.32.21
  2. 216.239.34.21
  3. 216.239.36.21
  4. 216.239.38.21

Again return back to the blogger account and check the box to redirect your blog to www. your blog name and click on the Save button.

If you have updated the CNAME and A records correctly, your custom domain will start working. Click on view blog to check the connection of your blog to the custom domain. In some cases, it may take some time. Once it is added correctly, your Blogspot domain will be redirected to your custom domain automatically.
